After 17 hours of being in the air, we arrived in Punta Arenas--the bottom of the world. Here we vvisited with several wonderful families and were able to see all the missionaries sing their Christmas concert int he mall. Mom quickly became the "Penguin whisperer" here on Magadalena Island where there are literally thousands of penguins.

After a quick couple of days in Punta Arenas, we flew back north and made our way to Osorno for Christmas. We had a fantastic dinner with President and Sister Lovell. On Christmas day they let us spend several hours in their home with them and the other office missionaries. It was a blast! They are an amazing couple and we loved every second with them.

One of the highlights of the trip was a fireside held Christmas evening with ward members, friends, and recent converts with whom Daniel associated with on the mission. It was a spiritual experience for all of us.

A lunch with Humberto and Marcela in La Union.

After enjoying Christmas in Osorno, we traveled south to the island of Chiloe. While there we journeyed out to sea to see more wildlife and more penguins! The waves were half the fun, with swells of up to 10-12 feet. The green countryside we passed on our way to the beach was also incomparable to any other place in the world.

Two great kids on the island of Chiloe!

We held another fireside in Ancud on Sunday night. It was a treat meeting these faithful saints. As is the tradition in Ancud, everyone had a yummy dinner together afterward. We were sad to leave these great people!

After Ancud, we had a free day...so we decided to drive 100 kilometers south of Puerto Montt to the town of Hornopiren. The ride was well out of the way and included ferries like the one here. The road was very bumping and muddy. We were lucky the car made it back okay. Good thing it was just a rental!

The drive to Hornopiren. Anne's face says it all.

When we got there it was absolutely beautiful! The town sits in the bottom of snow capped mountains and narrow fjords. For a second the clouds thinned out and we could see the top of the Hornopiren volcano near us. We also took advantage of kayaking in the bay here.

For most of the trip it was cloudy and rainy, so we weren't able to see the volcanoes. On our last day, however, we took a trip to Bariloche, Argentina passing by volcanoes and steep mountains on the way. We were very blessed with clear skies and an absolutely beautiful day. It was a perfect way to end a perfect trip!

Dan,
Wow! What a great trip. To bad the WHOLE family couldn't go:) What a fantastic place. It seems that the experience with the people, was every bit as wonderful as the Chilean experience!
Love you,
Steven
